Portals and Places

Sandy’s love of doorways originated with her fascination of the doorways and alleyways of Lithuania, her father’s homeland. Sandy’s father died when she was 11, and in seeking a connection to this man who left her life too early, she would pour over the pictures that chronicled his life. It was here that she saw the brightly colored wooden and metal doors and winding cobblestone streets, that look as if a life time of history had tested their sturdiness. Aesthetically, these doors do not need be explained to the beholder. It is the fascinating play of texture and color and depth that Sandy admired and ultimately captures so well.

What began with Lithuania merged into portals and entryways from places all around the world. The assemblages and paintings in Sandy’s Portals and Places series showcase a playful, awe inspired, and meaningfully curated presentation of the myriad of entrances into people’s lives.
